  • The pandemic has made me even closer to my dog, if that’s possible. I’m in Florida; my family is in Georgia; my friends here are sacrificing any gatherings in favor of safety, just like me. So it has been him and me for months on end, and at this point, with all the division in the country about something as simple as wearing a mask to protect others, I find his quiet intelligence refreshing and often preferable to uprighters. We walk. We talk, me with words and him in an nonverbal but subtle whimper that tells me that he doesn’t really care for that person talking on tv or singing on iTunes. He lets me know when he would really like to go outside, but turns around to see if I’m coming with. He follows me when I’m preparing food in the kitchen and volunteers to taste-test a new recipe. He looks longingly at me the few times I go out to the store and is so excited when I come back home. Sometimes he will decide to sing and will offer up an aria to the God of kibble. We depend on each other. And that is the biggest lesson learned from the pandemic. We depend on each other.

  • When the pandemic hit back in March 2020 I was ready! My family says that I have been preparing for this most of my life because I didn’t go anywhere anyway. From March 11th till May 25th I only walked to my mailbox everyday and didn’t go anywhere else. I didn’t even drive my car!! And now nearly a year later I’m still pretty much in pandemic mode but I did venture out to my doctor for my physical and Mammogram—those are important ones! All the other things I used to think I had to do seem pretty trivial now. I don’t need to do as much as I thought I did and I am content with just being “still.” I have always been so grateful for all the blessings I have been given but those blessings seem so much bigger now. I feel like I have lived through a year of Lent and now I’m ready for Holy Week!! Now, lets start boiling some eggs to put on those beautiful egg plates!! Y’all have a blessed season.

  • The pandemic has made me realize that sometimes you don’t appreciate how wonderful it is to be able to drop by friends and family. It seems like such an ordinary thing until you can’t do it.
